France October 2024 - Day 10 Bayonne to Bordeaux

Monday, 14 October 2024 18:49

Not my best day so far. It started well with warm sunshine ideal for a trip up the Atlantic coast to Bordeaux. I decided, as I have spent too much time in cities, to visit a Parc Naturelle which promised interesting trails and, by the look of it, great dunes. As I walked along the trails, which were fine, I would stop where I thought the dunes would be resplendent and each time I was dissapointed. A half hour quick walk ended up as and hour and ten minutes which threw my schedule out for the rest of the day. It was lovely to walk through the pine and oak forest, part of the great forest of Le Landes and to listen to woodpeckers and other birds and enjoy glimpses of butterflies and lizards but the dune vistas never appeared. The park is bounded by a logging concession and I could not help taking the snap below of a lone tree left standing reminding me of th excellent Molly Tuttle song ’Crooked Tree' which is really about her life as being an odd one out but the benefits that can bring. Back on track I stopped at Mimizan Plage for a walk and a snack lunch. It was very quiet. I guess we are out of season. My day was starting to run out so after a short visit to the giant dune at Pyla it was across to rush hour Bordeaux to charge the car and get to the hotel in the centre of the city. The headline picture is the beach at Mimizan and more pictures are included later. First I have added a few picture from the trail at the Courant d’Huchet Parc Naturelle. There were some people on the beach at Mimizan and even the odd surfer. A couple of cafes were open and I chose the one that did sandwiches and the chorizo was excellent. It was not busy but the staff were very relaxed and welcoming. Now if you like big dunes then Pyla is the place for you. I have issues sometimes with parking charges. I do not mind paying but when the only rate is €7 for 4 hours I tend to think who is going to spend four hours climbing a dune. Pyla offered 30 minutes free so off I went. See what confronted me. You have already walked a third of a mile through soft sand to get to the stairs. It was worth the climb and like many others I took the quick way down, filling my boots with sand on the way. From the top there is a great view over the bay of Arcachon and you can watch the masochists walking further along the dune crest. My legs were aching when I got to the ticket machine fully expecting a €7 fee but I must have just beaten the 30 minutes. Worth the sore legs for quite a location. There are a number of Tesla Superchargers around Bordeaux and the site that suited was at a large shopping centre at Begles by the southern ring road. There are 28 stalls with 8 being the new V4 configuration that allow non-Tesla users to use contactless payment. I used one of the traditional stalls as they are powerful enough for my maximum charging rate. It is now becoming a habit that I was just about the only user, but there was one other when I arrived a black model Y just out of shot to the right. Last night I had my first meal outside in Bayonne in one of the very few restaurants open on a Sunday and it was just fine. Tonight I ate outside again 5 minutes from the hotel and would you believe I had fish and chips with a nice Graves Blanc as my main course. The menu was limited and nothing else floated my boat and I have to say I made a great choice. Not my best day but still a good one.
