France October 2024 - Day 11 Bordeaux Cité du Vin

Another city, another very long walk but I had a little assistance from the Garonne ferries and a tram after picking up a day ticket at the hotel. The public transport is extensive and seems to work well from e-bike hire to trams, buses and ferries easily managed with a single app. Well done Bordeaux. It was a day that started with an umbrella and finished sweltering under a hat as you will see in the photos. As with my other city jaunts I picked a network of places that about covered the area I wanted to visit and then simply wandered around connecting each focal point. It is the first time I have stayed in the centre of the city and got on “Shanks’s Pony” so was immediately impressed by its scale. Boulevards and large buildings could have been in Paris but were interlinked by narrow almost medieval lanes. I like it. I could explain where all of the pictures were taken but that is really unimportant as I just want to give sense of place rather than a city tour. My hotel is on the east side of the mighty Garonne hence the ferries and the bulk of the day was on the west side. The headline picture is for a bit of comic relief. The funfare is on from October to March, the monument a bit more permanent. Of course there are carousels. The final two shots are here in Bastide across the river while out for an excellent pizza at a local restaurant. A good day and I now have a sense of the geography of central Bordeaux.
