France October 2024 - Day 3 Chateauroux to Cahors

Monday 7 October 2024 19:26

The weather has changed a bit with the rain no longer being heavy and is now torrential when it is falling. A lot of water has been deposited between Chateauroux and Cahors but I have had 4 1/2 lucky moments. First was a little wander around Chateauroux, dry, then a walk around Le Blanc in the Parc Natural des Brenne, half dry, a walk around Limoges almost dry, a stop with Susan and Charlie, almost dry, charging the car at Brive, almost dry. and unloading here in Cahors, almost dry. The water in places was across the roads making for a bit of motor boating. Here are a few snaps when the rain was not too bad. The first two are at Le Blanc on the River Vienne after a gentle drive along the edge of the Parc Natural. We jump back to Chateauroux for a couple of pictures, the second showing the memorial to children killed in the two 20th century wars. As a link the first pictures from Limoges are from their children’s memorial. Limoge is a big city with a couple of centres, old and new but in the old city everything is very close together so one is left with long shots down streets to places like the cathedral. There was lots of ‘street art’ including balloons and crocheted quilts. Very nice, as was the sandwich lunch. I stopped in with cousin Susan and Charlie and the trio of friendly dogs in the Perigord for a welcome cup of tea and excellent cakes. They have a lovely place in a slightly remote location but with their house as a favourite in the car’s navigation system I found them first time (this time). It’s always nice to catch up with family especially when we do not meet regularly. After a very, very wet run down the A20 I made it to Cahors. I usually avoid the Péage but decided I would accept the cost for the reduction in traffic and probably better draingage for a few Euros, around €8.10.  A slightly long day but tomorrow will be a gentle exploration of the western Lot valley. The hotel is right on the river and my room provided a nice early evening view to complete todays story. At the risk of becoming an advertising agency I must say Le Chartreuse Hotel and Restaurant here is at the top end of Logis that I have stayed at, with comfortable rooms and a great restaurant at sensible prices. If you are planning a trip to the wonderful Lot and Cere valleys I would not stay anywhere else. That is why I returned here after my previous visit in the spring and indeed chose to spend two nights rather than dash on to Toulouse.
