France October 2024 - Day 6 Toulouse
Thursday 10 October 2024 16:59
Time to leave the car in the garage and stride out around the centre of Toulouse. I picked a few top spots that were spread around the city as target points and then enjoyed the sights along the way. There are always places, not in the guide books, that attract my attention and today was no exception. A quick weather report, “changeable”. I guess you are wondering how many more bridge pictures you need to cope with well not many today. How about churches though. :-) One or two were emergency shelters from the rain, particularly at the “Couvent des Jacobins” and quite a stop it was. As the rain passed the sun shone through the stained glass windows with the result above. For continuity the first two shots below are inside and outside. Now I’ll kind of walk you through the day starting in Place Capitoule after a lovely breakfast. Via the empty Place St George and the Borbonne fountain I reached the St Etienne Cathedral for my first church of the day. It’s a cathedral in the true sense. Huge and plenty of stained glass and side chapels. I then headed to the Canal du Midi via the Grand Rond a lovely park/garden in the middle of a very large roundabout. There were other tourists out and about. I was about to be glad I had a waterproof jacket and my trusty fedora as I walked along the canal takng a little side step to one of the many churches along the way. Now back on familiar territory from my aerospace days it was down Jean Jaures to Place Wilson and my first carousel. The next one was in action and it was fun to hear Scottish accents with one little chap wanting a ride. Where to next? Ah yes another church. This time the Basilica St Sernin. I needed a break from the churches so headed down to the river Garonne to join a few others enjoying a bite of lunch. With a detour to the aforementoned “Couvent” I walked along the river to Pont Neuf, built in the 17th Century and with a span of 722 feet. Quite an achievement. Apart from a few lunch time joggers I pretty much had the quai to myself. It is quite a bridge so I hope you don’t mind another bridge photo. Speaking of repeats how about another church. This one is l’Eglise de Notre-Dame de la Dalblade, another I just encountered while walking to the Hotel d’Assezat via a slightly disturing mural outside a school. Who does not like a nice doorway. It was then past Toulouse equivalent of the Flatiron building and back along the narrow streets to Place Capitoule. This was a worthwhile 12km wander at a very gentle pace with pleny of stops along the way.
