Follies and Fin Whales

Monday, 10 November 2025 09:57

One of the walks I enjoy most is to the folly at Wimpole Hall across the sheep meadows north of the house. Fortunately it has been pretty dry in recent days as it can get a little muddy down by the lake on the way. It is popular with dog walkers, which is fine, as long as they are careful with the sheep, which the ones I see are. The majority of photos in this post are from my walk yesterday including a lovely low pass by a Spitfire from Duxford. The Fin Whale refers to the skeleton in the Zoological Museum in Cambridge. On Thursday I had a couple of hours available in the middle of the day and popped into the city from the Trumpington park and ride, grabbed lunch in the Whale Cafe and enjoyed the small but fascinating museum. The cafe has great coffee and tasty and inexpensive food in airy surroundings and has become a go to spot when I am in the city at lunchtime. So it has been follies and fin whales for me. The fin whale, for those interested, is the second longest whale after the blue whale and I have had the amazing fortune to see one at a distance powering along the Stellwagen Bank off New England on a visit in 2001 with my mother, while on a whale watching trip from Gloucester, Massachusetts.
