France Spring 2025 Day 12 - Up the Route Napoleon to Gap

In a practical sense I am heading home but wth some more interesting places to visit as I move generally north. Today I left the Med behind and climbed into the mountains over multiple 3000ft plus passes enjoying final hazy glimpses of the Côte d’Azur before the snow capped mountains came into view. After a quick charge stop at Cagnes-sur-Mer, although I really did not need it. I joined the Route Napoleon at the perfume capital, Grasse. Then the real climbing started creating some views. Shame about the haze looking into the light. I stopped off at a few small towns along the way including a lunch stop in Dignes-Les-Bain which sits on thermal springs. A highlight was a stop at Sisteron with its citadel on a rocky outcrop with another dramatic rocky outcrop across the river Buech. In the distance are the Vaucluse Drome mountains with snow on the higher peaks. Quite a spot. It was not my only big rock as there was another, equally impressive, at Castellane. Although the weather was generally fine and suprisingly warm there was a littlle flurry of sleet on one of the higher passes. My destination was Gap which sits, it seems, surrounded by snow capped mountains. After a top up at the local Tesla supercharger I had time for a quick break before taking a wander around the town to check out places to eat. The walk was fine in the early evening light but the temperature was taking a dive. I did not find any suitable eateries, in fact almost no eateries that were not pizza or fast food so ate at the hotel, which was surprisingly good. The bars were managing to keep going with groups drinking and smoking outside. Here are a few snaps I took along the way. The headline picture is from Sisteron as are the first three below. There are a couple looking back to the Med over Grasse and another mountain town. The next shot shows the distorted rocks lining the various valleys with little towns perched on the sides. A couple from Castellane follow covering their big rock and a canoe slalom course. Not far short of Dignes was a viewpoint whose name excapes me but that is quite a mountain with one of the sleet showers passing. The next three are in Dignes. The final 5 are here in Gap. A gentle day with only 8000 steps allowing my legs to recover.
