France Spring 2025 Day 16 - Lyon

Sunday, 30 March 2025 22:28

This is my first proper visit to Lyon having skirted it before and had a work visit once. I had a small product assurance team in Germany, working on Ariane 5, and we were having a problem with a supplier in Lyon so I was brought in as an escalation. It worked the supplier picked up their game. My two recollections are the near death ride in a taxi from the airport where the driver spent 50% of the time texting on his phone and a wonderful meal of poule de bresse. Time to get my public transport day pass and my walking shoes on. Croix-Rousse is a residential suburb at the top of a hill which is actually nice as eating in the restaurants is essentially local. The excellent if small capacity Metro whisked me down the hill to the edge of the main city. In fact for a stretch it is actually a cog railway it is that steep. I was actually a little out of town but wanted to see an old Gallo-Roman theatre, not the main one, and one of the painted walls that the city excels in. Then across the Soane river for a wander through the old city before riding the funicular to the main Gallo-Roman theatre and the Basilica of Notre Dame standing high above the city. Back down to the giant Place Bellecour before a dash over to the Rhone river and a wander through the modern town back to the Hotel de Ville and the Opera house. I then took a packed Metro up to Croix-Rousse to enjoy the view and a well earned beer before strolling back to the hotel. By the time I had walked down to the cente of Croix-Rousse for a simple dinner and back I had notched up a new record steps of 22,800, around 16 km. It did not seem too much as I made plenty of stops for coffee and the like and just to watch the world go by, which it did. A lovely way to spend a sunny but chilly Sunday. The headline picture is at the Gallo-Roman theatre on the hill above the city. The photos below will follow the sequence of the day. I hope this gives a sense of place and I finish with a couple of shots this evening in Croix-Rousse.

Are any of these people real. Spoiler alert. No
