France Spring 2025 Day 17 - Lyon to Dijon

Monday, 31 March 2025 21:15

I thought this would be a short day with not many miles between Lyon and Dijon despite meandering as close to the Soane as the roads would permit but allowing me to visit Macon, Chalon-sur Soane and other smaller towns along the way. In the end I arrived in Dijon at rush hour. The good news was I was not trying to get out of Dijon! It has been a bright sunny day with mid-teens air temperature but the persistant cold wind meaning warm jacket required. My hotel in Dijon is right in the centre and after finding it, the car park was a bit more sensible. That is because we just get a special rate in a large public car park right outside the hotel. The hotel also has a fine dining restaurant and fine dining it was. It also had a bit of a floor show in which I participated in having the two tier cheese chariot wheeled to my table. We also had flambéed crepes at other tables and steak tartar mashed up (cooking term) by another table and all with a lovely open kitchen. A good experience for a city that claims to be a leader in fine food and fine wine. People who orderd steaks had the raw steaks brought to show them to agree before cooking and they were then given the option to select between about 6 different streak knifes. Fun to watch. There are not too many photos today but here we go. The headline picture is from Chalon-sur-Soane the home of Nicephore Niepce, the inventor of phorography. That is him below. I’ve added a couple more from Chalon including a nice photo of a young lady and her dog enjoy the sunshine by the river. My first stop was used to get me onto the right roads by the Soane at Saint-Bernard. It is a big river which meets the Rhone at Lyon. Next was Macon, in many ways like Chalon a riverside town of a fair size. I suspect the brasserie by the market does not offer a big vegetarian selection. :-) I have seen some impressive wall art on this trip. Here the first is in Macon and the second in Beaune, about to head along the Route des Grand Cru. Before we get there I stopped in a little town, Sennery-le-Grand, when some grand buildings caught my eye and a wander found a lovely boulangerie-patisserie where they made me a lovely sandwich fresh, the best of this trip so far. I have added a few photos from Sennery including a couple of the noisy jackdaws. We are just about there. The Route des Grand Crus is like travelling through a live version of who is who in the wines of Burgundy. I stopped at Nuits-St-George, having sipped a little of their wine in the past, so here are a few snaps and to finish the view from my hotel window after dinner this evening.
