France Spring 2025 Day 9 - Nice Côte D'Azur (works both ways)

Sunday, 23 March 2025 20:45

At last a spell of sunshine, what else, in the lovely city of Nice. I have visited fairly recently, with Anne and Douglas, and on a trip heading to Southern Italy so have a reasonable sense of place. I looked around at places I had not visited and found one that I was keen on. There is a national museum of the work of Marc Chagall in the north of the city so that seemed a good way to get the day started. It openned at 10 am and by the time I had hiked up it was open and not too busy. Bizzarely as a couple of rooms were closed the €8 charge was waived. Security was airport style with bag check into the grounds, scanning portals at the ticket office and bag check again at the gallery entrance and no liquids. Phew! I was not familiar with his work but by reference in a song by the Weepies which has the line “we look like two lovers in a painting by Chagall”. I always wondered what the reference was. Now having seen his work I might infer a weird couple in a strange world. I may be overthinking this is it sounds great as a lyric in a song and Deb Talan (the writer) is a painter herself. His paintings, tapestries, stained glass and mozaics use strong colours and contain lots of incidental detail. A lot of the paintings took religious themes. There is a nice little cafe in the garden and the coffee was just the job. Now back down the hill to the Med via Avenue Jean Medecin passing the Basilica and onto Massena Square with its figures on poles and a statue of me in a fountain. Someone must have snapped me in the shower and sent it to the sculptor. :-) Along the promenade with the milling throngs. All shapes, sizes, ages and colours. The world was by the sea. With the recent rain the outfall into the Med was creating an interesting brown to blue junction. It did not worry the guy on the weird some sort of windless surfer. Lunch in Place Rossetti in the old town. I was ready to rest my legs and got into a nice restaurant as the numbers built up. Good food, decent price and a cold beer got me ready for a spot of mountaineering up to the chateau for the panoramic views. Around the ‘mountain’ I also enjoyed views of the port. Time to wander down to the port and back to the hotel. What a lovely day. The headline picture is lovers in a couple of paintings by Chagall. I’ll keep the sightseeing to follow a couple more views from the gallery. You have seen pictures of Nice before. :-) For those with the stamina to get to the bottom of this long post. There are three disconnected photos from today.

What are Jack and Rosie doing on the beach at Nice.?

Ah Sunday morning again just you and me.
