Forde to Voss - A gentle meander along Sognefjord

After yesterday’s long time on the road I was happy to have a short day and in fact dropped a possible site from my plan and just let myself meander over the mountains to Sognefjord. With it being only a 200 km (125 miles) drive I had the freedom to make plenty of stops. For most of the time I had the road to myself so could just pull over when the fancy took me. I generally drive at or just below the speed limit where the road is relatively straight but have found many Norwegians like to drive about 5kph over the speed limit. That is fine but when they catch me, for some reason, even though there are plenty of passing opportunities, they sit glued to my tail for miles and when that is the case I cannot safely make a decision to stop. Fortunately today that was rare as most of the time I was on “roads less travelled”. Almost no camper vans and the only coach which I saw being towed by a recovery vehicle. I also had a novelty experience on the electric powred ferry from Dragsvik to Vangsnes. On getting on the ferry and asked where I was going by the crew member I had to, along with others, turn the car around to face the way we came. It turned out that, I guess, because low season the ferry was doing a round trip of three ports adding Hella in the middle. Those going there pointed forward. We docked they got off and the new cars got on, hey voila pointing the same direction as me. It worked. After a low cloud start, making for some interesting driving conditions, it was sunshine all of the way with the temperature creeping into double figures in mid afternoon. Here are a few photos from along the way with the focal point being the mountain wall at the end of Sognefjord. The headline photo might need s little explanation. From the fjord looking north that is, I think, the Jostedal Glacier. We are just looking at the tip of one of its arms and, in all, it covers 188 square miles. An unexpected and welcome sighting. I’ll start in Forde with two small side by side images from my hotel room before and after breakfast. This was a hint of what I would find on the road. All roads around here at some point climb over a mountain pass or go through a long tunnel to get from one fjord to the next and from Sunnfjotd to Sogneford it was up and over. It is not just up and down as there are lakes to enjoy, some of which feed hydro power plants. The locals do like colourful buildings and quaint churches. The one in the photo was build in 1909. Sognefjord, on one of its legs has an enormous mountain wall which is actually best appreciated from on the water, in my case at the end of my ferry journey. It has a softer profile than Geiranger fjord and no cruise ships were in sight. The fjords are a land of waterfalls and there was a decent one here. On a careful look at the photo you will see two houses helping give scale. To get to my destination was another up and over, but this time more dramatic and not all of the way backdown. Voss is a winter sports centre on a high lake. The climb from Sognefjord was like a trip to the alps with cattle grazing on gently rising hills before it gets steep and rugged in a land of lakes and hydro power. The rest stops were not overcrowded :-) and at this one a feature of Norways’ roads was evident with a tunnel having replaced what must have been a scary road. Once through the tunnel it seemed lika another world before the inevitable decent which was dramatic enough to put 3% back into the battery. So it has been a much more relaxing day and tomorrow will be similar.
