Hurtigruten Day 1 - Tromso to Svolvaer
Sunday, 21 September 2025 22:15
The title is not strictly accurate as we have just arrived at our final port for the day at Stamsund but it is dark and I am ready for bed so “Nothing to see here”. In fact we are actually pretty close to Leknes where I stayed so the terrain is known. I have added a simplified map of the stops along the way today and the photographs are grouped between ports, as it were. Getting on the ferry in Tromso was a demonstration of how not to run a ferry company. Lets just say no signs to where to board and no information when you get there and then a gate opens and a chap asks you where you are going, puts a tag under a windscreen wiper takes your rfid key and sends you on board. At least on board things are better organised and quite busy at times. For some who chose them there are excursions and the first was where passengers leave the boat at a port, get on a bus and drive to the next port and get back on. If you like coach tours I am sure you’d like the idea. A second was a visit to the Hurtigruten museum and the third was a transfer to a small boat to see white-tailed eagles and to visit Trollsfjord. The latter was exactly what the ferry did but the excursionists got a closer look at white-tailed eagles. As you will see we got pretty decent views too. When the excursionists are off the boat it suits me with plenty of places to sit for a coffee and no crush outside while taking photos. With the preamble over I will let the photos tell there own story as the weather changed through the day. Where necessary I have added a caption for clarity.
Tromso to Harstad (overnight)
Harstad to Risoyhamn
Risoyhamn to Sortland (First Excursion Departed)
The flag waving was to greet the excusion coaches crossing te bridge. Well coordinated. And they were back.
Sortland to Stokmarkness (Home of the Hurtigruten Museum where it all started)
Guess which one is the museum.
Stokmarkness to Svolvaer via Fapsund and Trollsfjord
Now we follow the excursion
Eagle above the boat and now eagles everywhere
We are going to follow the little boat through that gap to get to the entrance of Trollsfjord!
And here we are in the amazing Trollsfjord. It is much tighter than it looks through a lens. The ferry has thrusters which allow it to turn on the spot, without them this would not be possible and the weather has to be kind.
And that brings us to Svolvaer on the Lofoten Islands to end a wonderful day.
