Trondheim to Molde

Sometimes unexpected things occur along the way, often a surprise spectacle or wildife encounter but today it was my destination, the Scandic Alexandra Molde. I could see from my plan it was close to the Coast of Fannefjord but what I did not expect was a balcony with panoramic view of the ferries coming and going with a backdrop of fresh snow on the mountains opposite. After dinner I had a ferry dock right downstairs, as you can see above. The day has been challenging with 20 minute periods of rain including 5 minutes of deluge then 2 minutes dry. If I happened to be at a planned sight when it was dry it was great but that was not always the case. It is also cold, 8 or 9 degrees, with a chill wind meaning everytime I stop I have to wrap up with jacket, hat and gloves which can mean by the time I am suited the wet has returned. The route from the ferry port at Trondheim is following the Atlantic Road, one of Norway’s scenic drives and it does not disappoint, with exotic bridges and causways taking you from island to island along the fjords with the mountains getting higher as you proceed south. For today’s photos I’ll give you a few more from Molde and then start at Trondheim picking up the car after leaving the ferry and on down the road. I have to say after the shaky start Hurtigruten did a good job. We arrived in Trondheim at 06:30 and breakfast was available and we had to vacate cabins by 8:00. Quite civilised. I was not sure about picking up the car but at checkout they had an array of car keys and my Tesla RFID card to choose from. “Which is yours?” I was asked and the answer was easy but what if there had been more than one Tesla as I have not labeled my card? Something to think about before I take another Hurtigruten ferry. :-) When I was in Trondheim last week I did not have time to explore so I worked through the rush hour traffic to have a look at Norway’s only neo-gothic cathedral which I approached along the edge of the Nidelva. The panoramic picture presents what is a straight line of buildings as a curve but gives an idea of the colourful buildings in this part of the city. I also bumped into Hjalmar Andersen a speed skater
world famous throughout Norway. There were glimpses of snow-capped mountains and waterfalls from rest stops along the main highway before taking to smaller roads that I had come to see. Note the clarity of the water at the combined camp and rest stop. The route included a 20 minute ferry ride. The start of the really interesting roads was at the large industrial port of Kristiansund where a pair of eider ducks were gently paddling around. From there my luck with the breaks in the rain was becoming an issue but you keep on rolling on. A little walk to a beach enjoying goosanders and godwits had me walking back though the rain, fortunately the deluge did not hit until I was back on the road. It was then on to the picturesque fishing village of Bud before the run down to Molde.
